Destin of Smarter Every Day went down the drain in my books as soon as he published a video about Flagella, and ended it by suggesting it could be intelligent design and told viewers to read a book authored by someone who is a staunch believer of intelligent design.
Crossed the line as a science Youtuber. You don't need to be athiest to be a scientist, and he definitely isn't. But you should at least know the line.
Finding out this site is basically just a copy of something that already existed and something they knew existed just further degrades my opinion of him. Especially with it being littered with ads. The ad literally takes up half my screen.
A good concept, I like it! But pleas make ads less invasive. I understand we all need to pay our bills, but that shouldn't interfere with the user experience.
Besides that, I didn't know there were so many guys in space as we speak!
> 1. I have had them subtly mess with websites I am working on and I probably wasted multiple hours troubleshooting an issue that wasn't an issue
If your website is going to be used by people with an adblocker, discovering that an adblocker unintentionally breaks your website is a feature of using one, not a bug.
I appreciate you recognizing us as the OG. We've tracked every launch since 2009!
Who is in space, they seem like nice people, I love the Smarter Every Day crew. (They actually tried to buy my domain years ago.) Pretty lame that they're running those insane Starlink ads but it is what it is.
Safari on MacBook Pro sees the time text wrapping in such a way that when the time is pushed to the next line, it literally overlaps partly with the "Total Time in space" label. The time is halfway up the letters of the label.
And these are the biggest ads I've seen obscuring a webpage in a very long time!
bit grusome but would be interesting to compare known time in space against increased cancer and eyesight problems that all the astronauts seem to come back with
I believe longest time in spacewalk was 9 hours but they spent 22 hours outside the capsule during the three days on the moon

Someone on HN that does not use ad block? This is still so confusing for me. Why not spend 40 seconds and never see any ads more?
Some reasons I don't use them anymore (in no specific order)
1. I have had them subtly mess with websites I am working on and I probably wasted multiple hours troubleshooting an issue that wasn't an issue
2. I have had them break a web form when I was trying to purchase something
3. I have purchased some things I like from ads and wouldn't have discovered otherwise
4. I don't frequent websites that overuse them or I can't work around them
5. I'm on a work laptop sometimes and I'm not allowed to use them for corp security reasons
6. I'm not sure I trust the ad blockers themselves, their developers, or their own app security
7. It's another process that can slow down viewing a webpage

I guess.. just like how wearing a seatbelt could end up killing you. Doesn't mean the exact opposite isn't a million times more likely.

Or AdGuard on a Raspberry Pi paired with Tailscale and never see ads on any machines you own again even on cellular.
Looks great with ublock origin running with default settings, fyi.
Jeezus h the ads ruin it W H Y

I feel like this post is just an AI slop copy of that site designed to grab free ad revenue.
I've flagged it and recommend others do the same.
Chinese and Russian space suits are almost identical in the photos!
> WHO IS IN SPACE is a project created by Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day and Geoff Barrett.
Neat. Destin has a great talk that he gave to/at NASA about Artemis a few years ago.

Didn’t know humans are spending that much time in space, over a year wow! I guess they need to workout daily to keep the muscles intact?
This website is unusable without closing out advertisements upon advertisements...
Interesting. I don't see any ads, even with my ad blocker turned off.
Yeah warning to mobile users, too. Basically unusable website because of the ads.
I miss the ad free web.
Maybe you should create whoisinspacewithnoads.com? :D
How about a new TLD, .noads?
not enough ads, i could almost see the content
Who is in space? Well, Tim Curry of course!
whois in space? what about RDAP in space?

Lai Ka-Ying. Nominative determinism!
"Laika" is the generic dog name in Russian. Means "barker".
Whole website for an ad btw
This is better than the Magic 8-ball. I DO like the visuals after clicking the Magic 8-ball though!
neat
adding it to my collection next to

cosmic rays are a b*tch

The adsense on this site annoys me. It's run by Dustin from Smarter Every Day (at least it was in 2023 https://x.com/smartereveryday/status/1631364605426511872). In the past, the site did not serve ads.
I guess we’re doxxing people now
The helmet portraits look goofy as hell.
We’re all in space bro
Whoisdangerouslyfarfromthesurfaceofearth.com doesn’t have the same ring.
Anyone else read this as WHOIS in space? Was ready to find out which TLDs had Galactic Coordinates for contact details
Call me crazy... but there's something about their faces. Almost like all of them are brothers and sisters. Creepy in a way.
Those Russians could get as far as they could from the stench of Putin and his genocidal war.
Those SpaceX suit photos look dumb. I very much prefer the traditional look of the Russian and Chinese crew photos.
They remind me of a “face-in-the-hole” board (1) photo.
